Mt. Airy Middle School Book Fair to Benefit USO Reading Program
Release Date: 4/12/2011 12:05:17 PM
Mt. Airy Middle School is holding a spring book fair to benefit the USO/United Through Reading Program. This is the first time that the school has held a benefit book fair. Family Night will be held on Monday, April 18, 2011, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the media center.
The USO/United Through Reading Program unites military families facing physical separation by having the deployed service member read a children’s book aloud while being recorded on DVD to send home to their children. The USO enables service members to participate in the program completely free of charge. The DVD, a copy of the book, instructions, and information on the program are mailed to the child and family at home. The parent or caregiver is encouraged to photograph and/or videotape the child as they watch the DVD and follow along with the book. The photograph and/or DVD are then sent to the deployed family member. The program has been expanded to offer more locations, and the USO plans to make 80,000 recordings in 2011.
