School System and Kiwanis Clubs to Sponsor Spotlight on Youth Event

The Carroll County Public School System, in conjunction with the Kiwanis Clubs of Carroll County, will sponsor a special event entitled Spotlight on Youth on Saturday, April 16, 2011. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manchester Valley High School.
This special day includes activities designed to spotlight some of the wonderful talents and skills of the students in our high schools:
Juried Art Show – Select pieces of artwork in five categories representing each of the high schools will be on display on the school’s “Main Street” throughout the event.
Carroll Academic Challenge – The 8th Annual Carroll Academic Challenge will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Teams from each high school will compete in a double elimination tournament. The final and championship round will be held in the media center at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Chess Tournament – Chess matches will be held in a single elimination tournament format. This activity begins at 9 a.m. in the media center. Students must register in advance through their home school.
Film Festival – Each high school has the opportunity to submit up to two entries in three different categories: broadcast journalism, short film, and animation/experimental. These submissions will be shown throughout the day in the auditorium. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at 12:30 p.m.
Edible Art Contest – This contest is open to all CCPS high school students. Edible art will be on display from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and will be judged by the public attending the event.
Floral Design Contest – This contest is open to all CCPS high school students interested in demonstrating their creative floral skills. Students will be provided a bundle of floral supplies and flowers and asked to create a product within an established period of time. The finished product will be judged and winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Pre-registration through the home school is required.
Vocal and Instrumental Selections – Throughout the day, vocal and instrumental selections will be presented on the “Main Street” hallway. A specific schedule will be available the morning of the event.
Dance Exhibitions – Exhibition performances from dance groups representing Francis Scott Key and Winters Mill High Schools will be presented throughout the morning in the auditorium. A specific schedule will be available the morning of the event.
Awards Ceremony – The awards ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium.
