State Comptroller to Present Maintenance Award to West Middle School

Release Date: 3/8/2011 10:46:40 AM

Maryland State Comptroller Peter Franchot will present the Silver Hammer Award for school maintenance to West Middle School on Monday, March 14, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. in the school’s media center. West Middle is one of 15 schools in the state to receive this honor during the inaugural year of the awards program.

Comptroller Franchot, who serves as a member of the Maryland Board of Public Works, established this special recognition for schools that have demonstrated a commitment to fiscal responsibility through superior school maintenance. The award recognizes schools for their efforts to maximize the life span of existing public school facilities and to ensure that students who attend school in older buildings have the same positive learning experience as their counterparts in newer facilities.

Recipients of the Silver Hammer Award are based upon the recommendation of each local education agency in consultation with the state’s Public School Construction Program.
