Ebb Valley Elementary School Community to Participate in Reading Program

Release Date: 1/25/2011 8:01:22 AM

Ebb Valley Elementary School will be participating in the One School, One Book program from January 28 through February 25, 2011. Ebb Valley is one of the first schools in Maryland to participate in this reading program that engages the entire elementary school community.

The goal of the program is to encourage reading together at home by enabling every family to read the selected book and to inspire them with a shared experience. The program is designed to help bring together the school community and encourage students to discuss their reading as they will all have the same book in common.

The program will be introduced to students at a pep rally on Friday, January 28, 2011, from 9 to 10 a.m. The title of the book also will be revealed at this time. Each family and staff member will receive a copy of the book. Each student will receive special reading bags with their copy of the book, a bookmark, and a reading schedule to take home that day.

Throughout the month, there will be a variety of activities at school and in different classes to heighten interest and assure that all students get involved. A daily trivia question read on the live morning announcements will help create daily awareness of the book and encourage students to develop good listening habits. There also will be art, writing, and reading activities based on the story throughout the month. A second assembly will be held on Friday, February 11, to encourage continuing interest.

The culmination of the program will take place on Friday, February 25, during Bedtime Story Night, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Parents and students will attend this annual event wearing their pajamas to hear bedtime stories read by teachers. The Lions Club will provide milk and cookies for a “bedtime” snack. During the first reading session, teachers will read aloud the final chapter of the book.

According to media specialist Helga Anderson, “When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about. We hope to build a community of readers at Ebb Valley Elementary School.”

The books were purchased by the school’s PTA. Parents, students, and staff members also will have the opportunity to purchase tee shirts and sweatshirts with a special Ebb Valley One School, One Book logo.
