Liberty “Upstagers” Win Top Awards at State Thespian Festival

The Liberty High School Upstagers participated in the Maryland State Thespian Festival during the weekend of January 7-8, 2011. The drama students performed an original one act play entitled Looking the Other Way, written by 2010 graduate Aileen Gray. The play, inspired by a true story, examines the effects of drug abuse on an entire community.
The Upstagers won numerous awards for their performance, including outstanding one act play and best ensemble, as well as best staging, sound, truth in world and story, and costumes. Shane Moran and Kate Cowart received outstanding actor awards. Other students performing at the festival included Nathan Cromer, Charlotte Duggan, Luke Ely, Shaelynn Forshee, Courtney Jarmush, Katelyn Lester, Kristen Luther, Rachel MacGregor, Susan Mueller, Alex Readmond, and Kyle Webb.
The Thespian Society is the Honors Society for drama programs across the nation. Schools from all over Maryland attended the festival to perform one act and full-length plays to showcase students’ talents.
In the past year, the Liberty High School Drama Club has won 22 awards throughout the state of Maryland and was recognized by the Carroll County Times for its production of Peter Pan as a Top Ten Performance of 2010. Tony Cimino is the drama teacher at Liberty.
