Oklahoma Road Middle School has been named as a Maryland 2011 Blue Ribbon School. Dr. Nancy Grasmick, State Superintendent of Schools, announced the award on Friday, December 17, 2010, at the Maryland State Department of Education.
The Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a state and national program that recognizes and honors schools that exhibit high performance and/or significant improvement in reading and mathematics achievement as measured by Maryland’s assessments. Schools must meet rigorous standards developed by the Maryland State Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Education. These schools are either extremely high achievers in reading and mathematics or economically disadvantaged schools exceeding norms and dramatically improving student achievement in reading and mathematics.
According to Superintendent of Schools Stephen Guthrie, “I am pleased to learn of the wonderful news and recognition for Oklahoma Road Middle School. Congratulations to students and staff and parent community on this wonderful achievement.”
Oklahoma Road Middle School, located in Sykesville, first opened its doors to students in January 1997. The “Home of the Twisters” continues to advocate for all children. The school motto is “Good, Better, Best!” Oklahoma Road Middle School is proud of its staff, who serve as advisors and provide leadership for a wide range of extracurricular activities and clubs. The school also takes pride in its active, involved parent community which supports students and staff in academics and extracurricular programs, as well as maintaining a viable PTA presence.
Students excel at high levels with 67% of the student body earning Honor Roll status. Students in need of interventions in math and reading are identified and immediately provided services which include the reading and/or math lab. Students who need additional supports in the areas of organization, assignment completion, and a quiet place to do their homework are provided with time before, during, and after school.
The Oklahoma Road Middle School SHOUT group regularly sponsors the American Red Cross Blood Drive and this year is conducting a drive for Carroll Hospital Center’s “Bundles for Babies” campaign. The school is an annual participant in the Maryland “Harvest for the Hungry” Food Drive. Oklahoma Road Middle School earned Maryland Green School status in April 2009 for the very first time. Green School efforts continue both in and out of the classroom.
Maryland can select up to six schools for recognition, based on its school-age population. The Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools go on to compete for National Blue Ribbon Awards, which will be announced by the U.S. Department of Education next September.
