Release Date: 9/2/2010 9:39:54 AM
Tuesday, September 14, 2010, is National Anthem Day, as well as Maryland’s Primary Election Day. Honors Chorus students at Runnymede Elementary School will mark the occasion by singing The Star-Spangled Banner and other patriotic songs around the flagpole at the school. The performance will take place from 9 to 9:15 a.m. as parents and community members come to the school to vote.
Students from around the country will be singing at different venues as part of The National Association for Music Education’s National Anthem Project. The purpose of the project is to re-teach the anthem while raising awareness of the importance of school music.
Runnymede Elementary School has a special connection to Francis Scott Key, who penned the famous poem during the War of 1812. The school is located on land that was once owned by his grandfather, Francis Key.
