Carroll County Team Places 5th at International Envirothon

After winning the 20th Annual Maryland Envirothon, Venturing Crew 202 from Westminster High School went on to represent the state of Maryland at the 2010 Canon Envirothon and finished in 5th place.
This international competition was held from August 1-6, 2010 at California State University in Fresno, California. The Envirothon brought together a total of 54 teams, with 45 states and 9 Canadian provinces competing.
The members of Venturing Crew 202 are 2010 graduates Ransom Leland Baldwin VII and Eric Kazyak and seniors Rebecca Baldwin, Reed Portney, and Kelly Habicht from Westminster High School. The team’s advisors are Paul Kazyak and Claudia Lewis.
Teams participating in the Canon Envirothon have the chance to compete against one another for recognition and various scholarship opportunities by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management. In addition to their overall oral presentation skills, teams are evaluated on the following categories: soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and a current environmental issue. At the end of the competition, scores are combined for final rankings and awards distribution.
