Release Date: 5/25/2010 1:06:46 PM
East Middle, Hampstead Elementary, and Parr’s Ridge Elementary Schools will be inducted as Certified Maryland Green Schools at the Annual Maryland Green School Awards Ceremony on Friday, June 4, 2010, at Sandy Point State Park. The new Green Schools will receive the Maryland Green Flag, a symbol of their continued commitment to the environment. In addition, Mt. Airy Elementary School will receive recertification as a Maryland Green School.
The Maryland Green Schools Awards Program was developed and is administered by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. The program challenges schools to integrate the environment into all aspects of the school culture, including professional development for teachers, curricular integration, modeling of best management practices inside and outside the school, community involvement, and celebration.
Maryland Green Schools have been proven to outperform other schools in math and reading and prepare students for becoming environmental stewards as adults and for 21st century “green” jobs. The projects that are implemented within the school buildings and on school grounds contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, reducing pollutants in the Chesapeake Bay, reducing solid waste disposal, and increasing wildlife habitat.
