Westminster Student Places 1st in State InvestWrite Essay Contest

Amanda Redden, a senior at Westminster High School, placed first at the state level in the InvestWrite essay contest, which is part of the Stock Market Game. Students participating in the game wrote essays on how a national or international current event affected a particular stock in their portfolio.
Redden is a student in the Academy of Finance and is completing an internship at the accounting firm of Sturgill & Associates. She received a U.S. savings bond at the Maryland Council on Economic Education Awards Program on Wednesday, May 19.
The Carroll County Academy of Finance program is designed for students interested in careers as accountants, bankers, financial advisors, insurance agents, and other finance-related professions, and is open to students from all eight county high schools. Academy of Finance students take college-level accounting at their home schools, two courses at Westminster High School, and a financial management course at Carroll Community College. They also complete a six-week paid internship. Students completing the program are awarded certification from the National Academy Foundation and the Financial Services Completer.
