Release Date: 5/6/2010 1:21:41 PM
The Carroll County Public School System has been awarded an EcoStar Grant from the Constellation Energy Foundation for the Chestnut Restoration Project. The $5,000 donation will provide the necessary funding for a GIS mapping system.
This geographic information system will allow the school system to capture, manage, and analyze data about its chestnut orchards in order to pollinate trees for blight resistance with the ultimate goal of chestnut reforestation. The project is integrated into the Carroll County Public Schools science curriculum and in partnership with various partners, including local schools and colleges, for specific and scientifically strong forest mapping outcomes.
Constellation Energy awards the EcoStar grants to nonprofit organizations engaged in environmental stewardship projects in states where Constellation Energy does business. Grants are awarded to projects that fit into one or more of five stewardship categories: pollution prevention, education and outreach, energy efficiency, conservation, and community activism.
