Cranberry Station Elementary School has been selected as the Maryland State Exemplary Reading Program Award winner for the 2009-2010 school year by the State of Maryland International Reading Association (SoMIRAC).
The teachers at Cranberry Station Elementary School believe that all children have the ability to think abstractly if they create an environment that encourages and fosters personal response, written and oral, on a continuing daily basis. “Making thinking visible” is the underlying concept in planning in all subject areas.
The school provides extensive professional development focusing on teacher learning styles, solid research practices, and opportunities for teachers to collaborate and share ideas. Cranberry Station is a Professional Development School with McDaniel College and hosts many student interns from the college each year. Staff members have offered presentations explaining strategy instruction for parents throughout the school year, and the principal highlights one strategy a month in the parent newsletter. Teachers send home “info-messages” each week to update parents about strategies they are learning to strengthen home/school connections.
Cranberry Station’s staff, parents and the community partner to ensure that literacy activities occur during the school day and beyond. For the past two years, Family Reading Night was a joint collaboration between Carroll County Public Schools, the Carroll County Public Library’s Children’s Services, the media and ILA specialists, and school staff. The event featured numerous activities to promote reading, including a story time provided by librarians from public library, advanced summer reading sign-ups, a showcase of second and third grade work using the authors as mentors writing strategy, a book scavenger hunt contest, and favorite author displays for each level.
The award will be presented at the annual SoMIRAC Bosses’ Breakfast on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the Hunt Valley Conference Center. Cranberry Station Elementary School will represent Maryland at the International Annual Conference in Chicago from April 25-28, 2010.
