The Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance (AEMS) recently named Century High School as a 2009-2010 Maryland State School of Excellence Award recipient. AEMS, in conjunction with The Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network, has awarded the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Schools of Excellence in Arts Education Award to Century High School for outstanding achievement in arts education. This award is designed to recognize and honor individual schools for their excellent arts education programs and for outstanding accomplishments in making the arts an essential part of education their district.
Century High School integrates arts education into all aspects of school life and offers career academy majors for students in the areas of dance, visual arts, music, and theater. As freshmen, students choose an academy in one of four areas. The Arts, Humanities, and Communications Academy allows students to focus on one of the strands of art and take numerous electives within this subject area. However, because arts education is essential and beneficial to students in areas of business, science, or social services, all students in every academy are encouraged to take arts courses and receive academy credit for these classes. This allows the students to earn an academy certificate as an extra honor upon graduating.
Visual, musical, and dramatic arts classes are offered as separate subjects at Century High School. The state of the art building has a full theater, an outdoor Shakespearean stage, three visual arts classrooms, a graphics design lab, studio space for visual arts students, a ceramics studio (with potter’s wheels and kilns), chorus room, instrumental music room with adjacent sound-proof studios for independent student work, and a dance studio. Century’s extracurricular offerings in the arts include National Art Honor Society, Drama Club and Thespian Society, and The Rude Mechanicals Student Shakespeare Company. The school also has The Marching Knights national award-winning marching band, as well as orchestra, symphonic band, and countless other events and activities, including annual coffee houses highlighting student performance and photography along with a school-wide Renfest every spring.
