Linda Kephart, Supervisor of Health and Physical Education for Carroll County Public Schools, will be awarded the William Burdick award by the Maryland Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD). The award is presented annually at the state convention to a deserving candidate who demonstrates distinctive leadership of a pioneer type in physical education, health education, recreation, or dance.
Prior to being a supervisor, Ms. Kephart was a physical educator at the elementary, middle, high school and collegiate levels. She served as the MAHPERD president-elect, president, and past-president. During that time, she presented sessions at the state and regional levels, served on the 2007 National Convention Planning Committee, spoke at the general assembly of the 2007 National Convention, and served as the convention manager of the 2008 MAHPERD state convention. In addition, she is an adjunct professor in the graduate program at McDaniel College and is a member of the Maryland State Advisory Council on Physical Fitness. Her leadership at the county level is focused on effective teaching, staff development, and the continual process of maintaining high class curriculums.
Deb Buenger, physical education teacher at Eldersburg Elementary School, says that Linda has been an advocate and role model for the profession. “Linda strives to get the best out of each teacher and has high expectations for student learning. She holds a valuable place in our county, state, district, and national organizations, exhibits great leadership, and continues to pioneer new programs to enhance the importance of physical education and health in the lives of all students.”
The award will be presented at the MAHPERD Convention Awards Banquet on Friday, October 16, 2009.
