Input on 2010-11 School Calendar - Thanksgiving/Spring Break

Release Date: 8/27/2009 1:34:19 PM

At the August 12 Board of Education meeting, the Board requested feedback on the proposed 2010-2011 school calendar. A large number of the responses requested that the school system schedule a longer spring break rather than closing schools the three days before Thanksgiving. The Board would like to receive feedback on the recommendation to add a longer spring break, which would be scheduled around the Easter holiday.
To add a longer spring break and eliminate the week off at Thanksgiving, it will be necessary to create two partial school weeks in November. The three days before Thanksgiving – November 22, 23 and 24, 2010 – would be regular school days. In addition, parent conferences will be scheduled prior to the Thanksgiving break, creating another partial week for students.
In the proposed calendar, schools are scheduled to be closed on Good Friday, April 22, 2011, and Easter Monday, April 25, 2011. If a longer spring break is added, schools would be closed on Monday, April 18; Tuesday, April 19; Wednesday, April 20; and Thursday, April 21, 2011, in addition to Good Friday and Easter Monday.
Please submit all comments and suggestions to by Friday, October 9, 2009. Please be aware that the media and Carroll County citizens have requested copies of e-mails sent to the feedback folder. Under the Public Information Act, e-mails sent to the Board are public information and will be disclosed.
The proposed calendar will be returned to the Board for action at its meeting on Wednesday, October 14, 2009.
