Christopher Nusbaum, who just completed fifth grade at Runnymede Elementary School, won third place in the National Braille Challenge held in Los Angeles on June 19-20, 2009.
The Braille Challenge is an academic competition designed to motivate blind students to emphasize their study of Braille, while rewarding their success with a fun-filled, but challenging, weekend of events. Nusbaum competed in the “Sophomore” category for students in grades 5-6 and was tested in reading comprehension, proofreading, spelling, and speed and accuracy in dictation. He has participated in this competition for the past four years.
The winners of the Challenge were announced at a gala Awards Ceremony on June 20. Scott MacIntyre, a contestant on season 8 of “American Idol” who is legally blind, was the guest speaker at the ceremony.
Nusbaum will begin sixth grade at Northwest Middle School in August.
