Austin Shields, a sixth grade student at Mt. Airy Middle School, was a winner in the 2009 Math Kangaroo USA international mathematics competition. He finished in 13th place and 23rd overall, which put him in the top 4%.
Math Kangaroo began in Australia in the 1980s and has expanded to include over 5 million students in more than 40 countries. The annual competition encourages students to learn mathematics by presenting them with problems that are interesting and by rewarding their efforts. The scope of problems for fifth and sixth grades included addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, magic squares, fractions and decimals, perimeter and area, geometry, and mathematical logic.
Approximately 2,600 American students in grades 2-12 participated in this year’s competition. All participants received a T-shirt, diploma, and special memento. The top 10% are included on the National Winners List. For more information, please visit www.mathkangaroo.org.
