“GREEN SCHOOLS” TO BE RECOGNIZED AT AWARDS CEREMONY

 

The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education Green Schools and Green Centers Western Region will hold an awards ceremony on Monday, June 1, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Carroll Community College. This is the first time Carroll County was chosen to host the ceremony because it had the largest number of new green schools. This is the first time that the county has hosted this event.

 

The ceremony will be followed by a Green Schools Festival at Hashawha Environmental Center from 1 to 4 p.m. The festival is open to the public and will feature hikes, birds of prey, live Celtic “Roots” music, a cake cutting ceremony, storytelling, and more.

 

The following Carroll County schools and centers will receive continuing certification as Green Schools:

  • Charles Carroll Elementary School
  • Hashawha Environmental Center/Bear Branch Nature Center
  • Liberty High School
  • Shiloh Middle School
  • William Winchester Elementary School.

 The following schools will receive their initial Green School Certification:

  • Cranberry Station Elementary School
  • Eldersburg Elementary School
  • Francis Scott Key High School
  • Mt. Airy Middle School
  • Oklahoma Road Middle School
  • Piney Ridge Elementary School
  • Sandymount Elementary School.

The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (www.maeoe.org) is the sponsoring organization of the “Maryland Green Schools and Maryland Green Centers” awards program. The purpose of the program is to recognize Maryland schools and environmental centers that have embraced comprehensive environmental education and action in the classroom, and in the operation of the facility and in the community.
