Release Date: 5/21/2009 2:37:58 PM

The Robo-Lions - Team 2199 of Liberty High School have been invited to compete in the Indiana Robotics Invitational being held in Indianapolis on July 31 and August 1, 2009. This premier competition is in its tenth year and brings together 72 top robotics teams from all over the nation to compete in this off-season event.

The Liberty students are actively searching for sponsors to make this event possible. It will take $750 to get the team registered for the event and to transport their robot to the competition this summer. “It is quite an honor to be invited,” said teacher mentor Rose Young. “I hope the community will rally around these kids and make this competition a reality for them.”

The Robo-Lions are part of FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). The organization was founded by Dean Kamen, who hopes to "transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.” To foster this vision, the Robo-Lions participate in local elementary school science fairs, business expos, and other community events during their off season. This summer is the first time in the team’s three year history that they have been invited to the Indiana competition. This may be in part to their excellent showing at the Chesapeake Regional Competition held in March, where they won the General Motors Industrial Design Award and came in second overall.

Businesses and community members who are interested in helping the team may send tax deductible donations to the Robo-Lions, c/o Liberty High School, 5855 Bartholow Road, Eldersburg, MD 21784. Sponsorships are available for the Indiana competition and the upcoming 2010 season. Please contact Rose Young at Liberty High School for more information “These kids are the future,” Young said. “I really hope the community will support them.”
