Student Members on the Board of Education

Lauren M. Hickey, current Student Member on the Board of Education of Carroll County, will be recognized for her year of service at the Board of Education meeting on May 13, 2009. In addition to serving as Student Member of the Board, Hickey has completed a Congressional internship with U.S. Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, served as a page in the United States Senate and the Maryland General Assembly, and worked as a youth correspondent for the Carroll County Times. Hickey is involved in the National Honor Society, the speech and debate team, Spanish Club, and the Carroll County Academic Challenge. She is a member of the tennis team, the cross country team, the indoor track team, and the ski club. Hickey has accumulated over 400 hours of community service and served as Secretary to the Student Senate, Secretary to the Key Club, and a member of the Maryland Association of Student Councils.
Elizabeth L. Welliver of the Class of 2011 at Winters Mill High School is currently the Student Member on the Board Elect. She will be seated as Student Member on the Board for 2009-2010 at the June 10 Board meeting. Welliver is a member of the Winters Mill Student Government Association Executive Board and the Key Club. During her sophomore year, she was a three-sport athlete. She plans to be on the speech and debate team and has applied for membership in the National Honor Society. Welliver serves as a counselor at the summer 4-H overnight camp for 8-11 and 11-14 year olds. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees for the Carroll County Public Schools Education Foundation. Welliver enjoys United States history, running, reading, and traveling. She cites her service as captain of JV field hockey this past fall as her most significant experience because she learned the hardships of leadership and teamwork. Her current career plans include majoring in Political Science or United States History in college, attending law school, and entering politics.
Samson A. Fowler of the Class of 2012 at Francis Scott Key High School will be the Student Member on the Board Elect for 2009-2010. His school activities include the Student Government Association, Freshman Executive Board, football, track, and the Iron Eagles Service Organization. Fowler also is the president of the freshman class. He is a member of the Maryland Association of Student Councils and lobbies in Annapolis on student issues and rights. Fowler participates in a variety of community activities including Boy Scouts and his church youth group. He also serves as a counselor and theatre director for Vacation Bible School. He has played baseball for the last nine years and made the all-star team several times. He assists in many service projects, such as the 30 Hour Famine to benefit WorldVision, an organization fighting starvation. He attended the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab Space Academy and competed in regional and state MathCounts competitions. Fowler is an advanced mathematics student and is interested in an engineering career.
