Scott D’Orazio, an instrumental music teacher and chorus director at Westminster East Middle School, was named Carroll County 2009 Teacher of the Year during the Board of Education’s employee recognition ceremony on Thursday, April 30, 2009.
D’Orazio earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from West Virginia University and will complete his Masters in Educational Administration from McDaniel College this May. He has been with the Carroll County Public School System for 9 years. The last 7 of those years have been in his current position at East Middle School. D’Orazio began his career at Robert Moton Elementary School. He also is the Assistant Marching Band Director at Winters Mill High School and a teacher in the Saturday School Program.
D’Orazio cites his own educational experience as being the most influential factor in his decision to become a teacher. “There were several teachers and coaches that were inspirational to me,” D’Orazio said. “I looked at them with envy because they had the ability to influence and provide opportunities to so many young men and women. They seemed to have been enjoying and learning in school just as much as I was.”
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, D’Orazio has been involved in staff development – presenting topics such as Educating the Whole Child for the 21st Century, Collaborative Problem Solving, and Effective Scheduling Techniques. He currently serves as the school webmaster, technology advisor, related arts team leader, and School Improvement Co-Chair and team member. D’Orazio is a member of the Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council and serves as a supervising teacher to a Towson University student teacher. D’Orazio’s membership in professional organizations includes the National Education Association, the Maryland Music Educators Association, and the Music Educators National Conference.
According to Mary Swack, principal at East Middle School, “Mr. D’Orazio is an extremely talented music teacher who consistently goes above and beyond to see that all of the students in his classes, band, orchestra, jazz band, and in his school have every opportunity to be successful both personally and academically. Educating the whole child is Mr. D’Orazio’s passion, and he will stop at nothing to make sure his students achieve their academic and character goals.”
The Carroll County Teacher of the Year Award is presented annually to an individual who represents Carroll County teachers in the Maryland Teacher of the Year Program, and possibly the National Teacher of the Year Program. Working in collaboration with the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, this year’s finalists for Teacher of the Year were selected by the Chamber of Commerce as winners of the Chamber’s Outstanding Teacher Awards.
