School System Addresses Swine Flu Concerns

Release Date: 4/30/2009 3:30:38 PM

In an effort to keep all of our students safe, Carroll County Public Schools and Carroll County Health Department have been in continued contact regarding the recent outbreaks of Swine Flu in the nation. Please know that there have been no confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Carroll County.

Swine Flu, like seasonal flu, appears to be spread from person to person. Flu symptoms are:

  • Fever of 100 or more
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Body aches
  • Some persons also experience nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

If your child has any symptoms of illness, keep them home and seek advice from your health care provider. Sick persons should stay at home until symptoms have been gone for 24 hours.

Some steps to take to also help prevent the spread of Communicable Diseases:

  • Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating, after coughing, sneezing, wiping or blowing the nose, and after using the bathroom.
  • You should wash your hands with soap and warm running water for at least 20 - 30 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use waterless hand cleanser until you have access to soap and water.
  • Keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes.
  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.
  • Cough/sneeze into your arm or shoulder rather than your hands.
  • Use paper tissues when blowing your nose and discard them after one use.
  • Stay away from crowded living and sleeping areas, if possible.

We will notify you if there are any changes in this situation. Please know that we will explicitly follow the direction of our State and Local Health Departments in dealing with the health of our students.
