Chamber of Commerce Names Outstanding Teachers

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce recognized 165 teachers at the 21st annual Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Teacher Awards reception and awards program held on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Winters Mill High School. The following teachers received Outstanding Teacher Awards:
David Bortz - U.S. History - Sykesville Middle School
Scott D’Orazio - Instrumental Music - East Middle School
Patrick Dotterweich - Social Studies - Shiloh Middle School
Tim Durkin - Science - Liberty High School
Ellen Gulya - Grade 2 - Charles Carroll Elementary School
Patricia Keenan - Spanish - South Carroll High School
Lisa Macurak - Social Studies - New Windsor Middle School
Dick Thompson - Reading Language Arts - West Middle School.
These awards recognize the excellence of the men and women who teach in the Carroll County Public School System. Any student, parent, teacher, or school administrator may nominate a teacher. The nomination form included questions requiring specific examples of ways the teacher helps students apply what they have learned to real-world situations and how they inspire students to learn and build confidence and self-esteem.
The Carroll County Teacher of the Year will be chosen from among the eight teachers receiving the Chamber’s Outstanding Teacher Award. That candidate will be Carroll County’s representative for the Maryland Teacher of the Year program. The Carroll County Public Schools Education Foundation will award the Carroll County Teacher of the Year with $1,000 to be used for an educational project or program of his or her choice.
