Speech Contest to be Featured at Spotlight on Youth Event

The Carroll County Public School System, in conjunction with the Kiwanis Clubs of Carroll County, will sponsor a special event entitled Spotlight on Youth on Saturday, March 28, 2009. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Westminster High School, located at 1225 Washington Road in Westminster. This special day includes a juried art show, the 6th Annual Carroll Academic Challenge, a county chess tournament, and a speech contest.
The speech contest will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Contests will be held in two categories – impromptu speeches and declamation speeches. Students participating in the impromptu speech category will randomly draw a topic and have a set time to prepare and present their speech. Those competing in the declamation category may select one of the following historic speeches to recite. Copies will be made available on the day of the contest, but participants are strongly encouraged to prepare in advance.

2. Weisel Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech
3. Stanton Speech at Seneca Falls
Medals for first and second place in each category, as well as a cash prize for the winner, will be awarded at the conclusion of the competition. All participants must sign up with their speech and debate coach at their high school by March 20, 2009.
