Four Westminster High School Marketing students, and DECA members (an international organization of High School Marketing students), participated at the forty-sixth annual Maryland State DECA Career Development Conference at the Double Tree Hotel in Annapolis, Maryland on March 5 and 6, 2009.
Following are the individual students’ accomplishments:
Ryan Fiore, 1st Place in the Accounting Applications Competency Series Event and 1st Place in the Entrepreneurship Written Business Plan Team Event.
Evan Nave, 2nd Place in the Accounting Applications Competency Series Event.
Justin Sowinski, 1st Place in the Entrepreneurship Written Business Plan Team Event.
Andrew Berkow, 3rd Place in the Marketing Management Competency Series Event.
The 1st and 2nd place wins of Ryan Fiore, Evan Nave, and Justin Sowinski in their events qualify them to represent Maryland and Carroll County at the International DECA Career Development Conference to be held in Anaheim, California from April 29 – May 2, 2009. In Anaheim, they will join and compete against over 13,000 marketing students from all 50 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, Europe and Asia.
Peggy Payne, Business and Marketing Department Chairperson and Marketing Program teacher and DECA advisor at Westminster High School, noted, “Not only can the parents, Westminster High School and Carroll County Public Schools take pride and delight in the accomplishments of these fine students, but our entire community should. These young men and women who seriously studied marketing, accounting and finance in high school will be the backbone of our business community in the future. We need to encourage and commend their focus and drive. I am proud to be their teacher and DECA coach.”
In order to attend the International Competition, over $3,850 needs to be raised to cover the basic travel and registration expenses for the three students and their advisor. Since the entire cost of the trip must be raised by the students and advisor, any individual or business wishing to help sponsor a student’s attendance at the conference is encouraged to contact and send contributions to Peggy Payne, DECA Advisor, Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road, Westminster, MD 21157. She may be reached by telephone at 410-751-3630, ext. 276. Any amount would be greatly appreciated. DECA is a non-profit organization and all donations should be tax-deductible. A receipt will be provided.
