RESCHEDULED - Students to Participate in 2nd STEM Invitational
Release Date: 12/17/2008 1:28:45 PMRESCHEDULED: The second STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Invitational will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carroll Community College.
Ninth grade students from county high schools will participate in two events written by multidisciplinary teams of teachers from Carroll County Public Schools. Individual event winners, as well as an overall team winner, will be awarded. The challenges integrate STEM disciplines and have a relationship to alternative energy. Following the events, students will be provided lunch prior to an awards ceremony.
Students will be bused to and from their home schools. Interested ninth grade students should contact a ninth grade, science, technology, or math teacher at their home school.
General Dynamics, Information Technology and Security Solutions, Intellitech, Kohn Creative, Lehigh Cement, Northrop Grumman, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Siemon will support the event by providing professionals to act as judges for the challenges.
The STEM initiative is designed to increase student interest and participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and to provide students with knowledge and understanding about careers in these fields. Through the program, students also have the opportunity to apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts and skills in integrated and meaningful ways.
